Hugging Angela Davis - Dissidente Solidaritäten

Audio

In September 1972, in the aftermath of the popular East German solidarity campaign, Angela Davis visited East Berlin. At the occasion of an official wreath-laying ceremony, Davis spontaneously hugged the dissident Erika Berthold-Havemann. Taking this event as its point of departure, the lecture asks for the possibility of a dissident solidarity. Dissidence here does not imply abandoning communism. Rather, the basis for these considerations is provided by the fact that the communism of these two women was already permeated by the violent conditions in which it became political practice. When these women met, they had to face the contradictions of their respective historical contexts: the internationalism and unacknowledged racism of the GDR, and the Stalinism and sexism of the Communist Party of the United States. Solidarity would be dissident when the emphatic recognition of contradictions is turned into the point of departure for the possibility of a politics of embracement.
